Come here if you want to have a great time. The waiters were chipper and friendly. Always refilling the salsa, chips, and water. Food and drinks came out fast. Price and quality very reasonable. Place to go for a large group or for two. Will be back.

Nice little local place to dine after a day trip from Portland exploring the Gorges. We stopped by for a late lunch and really enjoyed the food and service.

Stellar service. Lots of free chips. Thick salsa with two extra spicy. Even brought us extra extra spicy salsa! Fajita burritos was full of delicious steak. Tamales were tasty but not presented in corn husk.

Good food. Good atmosphere. Great tasting Margaritas. Will definitely be back. I had the chicken tamale and it was delicious. With a margarita of course!!

I LOVE the Crazy Pepper! When we first arrived at the bar we were welcomed by fresh warm Chips and Salsa, both were great, and made in house. We then ordered Margaritas on the Rocks, and I normally don't even like Tequila or Margaritas, but have to say this was by far the best I'd ever had! Even ordered a second one. We ordered 3 different Shrimp dishes, and all of them were wonderful and tasty! I also liked all of the Glutton Free and Vegetarian options on the menu. I only wish I lived closer to frequent the restaurant more often. I will definitely be returning to The Crazy Pepper next time I'm in Hood River!

We stopped in during the late afternoon. The chips and salsas were so good. The prices were great ! The portions were huge! We shared a taco (big tacos) platter and chips & salsa and we were full to the brim. The staff was fun and friendly. Great spot!

Great margaritas, great service. Great happy hour. This is a definite yes. Super accommodating staff. We had a fantastic time and perhaps too many of those excellent margaritas. Did I mention the margaritas?

1st and most important, they serve free chips and salsa on arrival. 2nd, the margarita I had (blackberry flavored) was delicious and you can get it on the rocks or blended, which is a nice choice to have. The food was quite amazing. I ordered a chimichanga and it came with all the fixins. Comes with rice and you get a choice of beans. Nothing was too salty, good-sized portions, typical pricing for a touristy town. I would definitely recommend going here if you're craving some yummy Mexican fare. Only complaint if I had to have one, was that the service although very friendly and prompt seemed unsure of themselves - they must have been new servers but you shouldn't hold that against them!

Love the crispy shredded beef tacos. Nice combo plates. Lots of tv's in the bar area all with some weird time delay. Good margaritas. Standard Americanized Mexican food, good service and I believe the only choice for mexican down town.

Favorite Mexican place in town! Great Chips, salsa and love the service!!

My ladyfriend and myself took a day trip from Portland and decided to make our traditional stop at Double Mountain for some lunch and a brew. But alas!, they were closed for a holiday party. So we ended walking down the street to give The Crazy Pepper a go. We are so glad we did. Incredible food, reasonable prices, great service, and some fun interior decor. Oh, and complimentary chips and salsa! We both ordered the Carne Asada Torta and walked away very happy (and with some leftovers). I recommend the Crazy Pepper without reservation.

Oh yeah...this place is awesome. I went here on a solicited recommendation from a store owner and was not disappointed. The atmosphere was good, the service was quick and friendly and the meal was spot on. I had a roasted pork taco salad and I had to force myself to stop eating it because I was becoming physically ill. Without question this will be a repeat dinner spot.

Good solid Mexican fare in Hood River. Their table salsa isn't my favorite, but other attributes more than make up for it. The service is excellent...even if you're just getting a cheap lunch special, they make you feel like royalty here. Also, the rice and beans. I don't know what exactly it is about them, but they're better than the rice and beans you get at 95% of the Mexican joints in the PNW. You can choose between black, pinto or refried beans (I usually get pinto or black and they're both dank), and the rice is just right. Finally, for what you get the price is really quite low. There is a public parking lot across the street (I think it's permit-only during the week, but on weekends it's free).

This review is more for the waitress than the restaurant itself. It was pretty standard Mexican fare and it was tasty but not earth-shattering. I'm pretty bummed I can't remember her name right now but she was incredible. I was there with about 10 construction workers. And they were acting like pretty stereotypical construction workers, in a good-natured sort of way (of course). She rocked it. Not only did she hold down the fort (also known as the huge table in the middle of the restaurant where we were all sitting and being rowdy) and get every order right, but she also served a bit of sass with the meal. Just what the guys needed. It was great! She kept her cool even though I imagine we wore her out, especially because it was towards the end of the night. Way to go! I would eat here again just to have her back-talk my guys some more. Hahaha!

Tasty. I've been here before and remembered from past trips. I could have sworn I wrote a review previously but yes, service a ten as always and tasty food. They do not deliver small plates of food either. We had so much we brought it home with us and will be having it for dinner. Thanks for the nice atmosphere and quick and efficient service.

Terrific Mexican food! The crab burrito was loaded with crab meat and the service was excellent. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food you get. If you are in Hood River go there. You won't be disappointed.

the place serve free chips and salsa on arrival and the service has been nice. It has some good Mexican foods that taste delicous. I been here for drinks and lunch. THey have good lunch specials. The portions are big, I dont eat all of it.

Hood River is a beautiful town on the Columbia Gorge that has a delightful pedestrian-friendly downtown area blah blah blah but this place is lame. It was recommended to my dad and I by a hipster bartender who seemed reliable about such matters, so Crazy Pep's failure to deliver was indeed something of a personal betrayal. The salsa is sweet with no spice to speak of, which put me in the mind of runny ketchup. I had a burrito/tamale combination and while the tamale was pretty decent, the burrito was eh, with no other ingredients to speak of besides meat. My major complaint was that nothing was spicy here which is fine I guess but also, why bother. You could do worse passing through town (there is a chain pizza place that is sad and also more terrible) but just waddle around that adorable little downtown and find something better.

Great food and great service. The free chips and salsa are delicious - chips are served hot! The portions are huge and the food is really good.

No complaints here. Food, service and margaritas were all great. It was busy the night I went but they hustled and the food came out real quick. Really liked it.

  • Jack R.

I enjoyed that the Crazy Pepper has not been afflicted by the pretentiousness that seems to be infecting other establishments in Hood River. This was your basic Mexican restaurant. I enjoyed the arroz con pollo and friendly waitstaff.

  • Willa S.

A friend and I each had the no-shell taco salad in hopes of counting calories and were just amazed at how good they were! She ordered it with fajita steak and I with fajita chicken and they were both really good. They used real lettuce, not iceberg, and we both chose black beans. Great that a healthy meal in a restaurant could taste so good.

    (4)
  • Amy C.

Delicious margaritas and a decent choice of the higher end tequilas. The food was good-I had the steak fajitas which didn't have a ton of spice like I like but still tasty. Yummy salsa with tons of cilantro. Good for big groups and kids.

    (3)
  • T C.

This place is generic and geared toward tourists. The service is mediocre and so is the food. Rice beans and salsa are all bland with no signature, chips are out of a cheap bag for sure. Unless you're hungry and in a pinch, look around for better, more authentic Mexican food. The best thing I've had are the fish tacos, I've clearly been "in a pinch" and eaten here a handful of times.

Good ambiance. Not too noisy. Food was good (quesadilla supreme and fajitas) Good service Kids friendly, perfect portion and not too expensive Its a nice place to go with kids

Food was mediocre. Service seemed annoyed with our large group even though we made everything really easy on them.

  • Bj F.

We came here because we didn't want pizza ..... So glad we didn't ! It was $2 taco night and they were delicious! I had a shredded beef taco and a shredded chicken taco and I would be hard pressed to choose one over the other! There was so much meat on each taco that it was more than enough food without beans and rice. The service was fast, we had an extremely friendly server and honestly everyone there checked on us to be sure we were ok! Definitely recommend giving this place a shot!!!!!

  • Monica L.

Went to the crazy pepper a week ago with a friend, so this review is due. The food was good, though there were not many vegetarian options for my friend. The thing I found most troubling was the service. Rarely would anyone check up on the table and I would often have to call someone over. The owner himself was waiting on tables and when he got to our table, as we had already called him over once, he looked away the other times and pretended to not see us. It was an unfortunate visit that was lacking in friendliness and good service. It's disappointing because I actually really like this restaurant more than all the others in Hood River. Guess I'll have to find a new favorite.

    (2)
  • Chana L.

Not vegetarian friendly. They fry their chips in lard. Who still does that?? I assume refried beans have lard in them so I always order whole beans. Mexican is my families go to meal because there are veggie choices. Unfortunately I will not be coming back here. Margaritas are good though.

I visited this restaurant back in 2003. Whether or not the taste of the food has changed, I won't be able to tell you. But recalling from my experience back in July 2013, I won't go there again. I had enchiladas and they were so disappointing. I guess being from Texas, finding better Mexican food in this little town would be difficult

  • Gabrielle S.

Starting off with fresh hot chips and three choices of salsas after having a few too many post-hike beers was wonderful. Their green salsa killed it! Margarita was wonderful- not too much margarita mix, which I usually run into. I got the camarones rancheros for dinner. As previously mentioned the portions are monsterous (didn't touch the beans or tortillas) the sauce was great, but the shrimp were wildly (like curly-q) over cooked. Still tasty but a bit of a bummer. I can still recommend it (though this may be a post hike and margarita fueled recommendation)

Really great Mexican food!!! Homemade tacos with freshly cooked crisp tortilla shells (not store bought). Excellent pork tamales. Homemade refried beans, although needed more salt for full flavor. Very impressed that they are home cooking, and I had my meal in under 10 minutes, hot! Wow. Service was outstanding. They even offered specialty salsas in addition to their standard salsa. If you are a Mexican food fanatic, this is a hidden gem in Hood River.

  • Ron C.

We accident found this place and the waiter informed us it was $2 taco night. All I can say is WOW. That's the best 4.00 meal I've ever had. Service was great! The staff was courteous and super fast.

Amazing food, lunch specials even come with a drink included. I got the bean and cheese burrito. Even though the plates were small, they were definitely filling!

Ordered carnitas tacos and received three chunks of pork stuffed in a tortilla floating with , oil flavor was bland across the board pork, rice and beans. Politely mentioned to server but he hadn't real interest in the topic.

We stopped here based only on 3 things initially: The yelp rating That it's mexican good (yummmm) It was nearby on our long drive. We were not disappointed! The service was great, from the gal that sat us at our table to our super nice server-- fantastic! We both ordered fajitas-- I had steak, he has chicken and they were both delicious. A ton of food for your money, I wound up with a good amount of leftovers for lunch today :) If you are in the area definitely stop here, it is delicious!

  • Maggie H.

I was really impressed with this place. Great service, excellent food, and one of only a handful of Mexican restaurants I've ever seen actually make a good margarita that isn't just a giant goblet filled with gross margarita mix.

We found ourselves in Hood River for the day & I turned to Yelp for help with where to eat lunch. So glad I came across this place with its 4 star rating & great reviews. The atmosphere was great & it was family friendly. The food was great! Chips & salsa were homemade, beans & rice had great flavor. I had a pork enchilada & the pork fell apart. I would go back to this place next time I'm in Hood River. I'm giving it 4 stars because I hate paying 6 bucks for a kids meal. My adult sized meal was only $7.50. The adult sized portions are priced well but the kids prices are high.

We have eaten here many times, I usually choose this place for business lunches because it's fast and yummy. However, I took my two daughters and husband here last night and it was strangely bad. The hostess was rude, she even rolled her eyes at me once when I asked her to take my daughters dinner off our tab because there was a bug in it. My other daughter's beef burrito was awful tasting. My husband and I shared their crazy burrito and it was good like normal. When we finished and went to pay I asked the hostess (same one who rolled her eyes) if this was her first customer service job. She snapped at me "I don't do customer service, that's what we have a customer service manager for!" I kind of chuckled because I'm pretty positive if you interact with customers you'd better be capable of being helpful and polite. I wrote on my visa receipt that the hostess had terrible customer service but who knows if that will even be read by someone who can help guide their young hostess on how to interact with people respectfully and politely.

consistently good food and drinks, and the service is always top-notch! the prices are fair, there is a pretty decent tequila selection, and they serve chips with various delicious salsas as soon as you sit down.

After a long drive we decided to take a break and pulled in to Hood River looking for something interesting for dinner. The name caught our fancy and in we went. I must say the service was excellent. They were quick, attentive, and eager to start with. It tailed off a bit but that was to be expected as business started to pick up. The reason for only 2 stars is simply the food. to say we've had better is an understatement. Nothing was bad, but nothing made yo sit up and take notice. The salsa, mediocre at best, but the "hot" little cups the served with it both of those were pretty good. The chips, free yes, warm even, but still tasted a little stale. My wifes fish taco was ok, but the sauce they put in it gave it a slightly off taste, not bad, just weird. The shrimp enchilladas de la creme were ok, very bland to the point I needed to salt them. The pinto beans, very soupy and not much for flavor. The refried beans, good consistancy and nicely done, but bland. The spanish rice had color, but no flavor , and I mean no flavor like if I boiled up some rice with nothing in it there would've been more flavor. But it did have peas, a first for me to find in spanish rice. I don't know how long they've been open, but I sincerely hope they do better than what we experienced or they won't be open much longer.

  • D W.

The service was outstanding! The shrimp soup wasn't to my taste, a little too sweet, they let me replace it with a taco salad which was excellent and they have some of the best salsa I've ever had. I will definatley go back there the next time I'm in the area.

Not a great place.. had chicken diablo..it was just ok.. however the service was good and the restaurant hax decent ambience.

  • Mary B.

If you judge a Mexican restaurant by its beans and rice like I do, this place falls short. I would not recommend eating here unless you stick to the salsa, which is pretty tasty.

    (1)
  • Sam S.

We had dinner here the other night and the food was no bueno. It was no good. The chips and salsa were the first sign I wasn't going to like the Crazy Pepper... the chips weren't very good and the salsa wasn't spicy. I even added some of their spicier salsa to the regular salsa and it still wasn't that good. It didn't taste fresh or something... For dinner I ordered shredded beef enchiladas with rice and black beans. The shredded beef was not tender and was hard to eat. It was also not very flavorful. The rice was okay but the beans were dry and mostly tasteless. My wife ordered the fish tacos, which she said were really good. So either I ordered the wrong dish or I'm just crazy... or both... To wash everything down we had margaritas, blackberry and strawberry. The drinks were good but they were expensive! So be forewarned, there is not a cheap place to get your booze on.

    (2)
  • Marissa G.

Not impressed. If you're looking for volume over flavor, I have to admit the burrito they made me was enormous, especially for it's $5 price. But as far as flavor was concerned, it was lacking and no where near authentic. It wasn't even good for americanized mexican.

    (1)
  • Steve H.

The Crazy Pepper serves the kind of Mexican food that Gringos ate before they'd encountered any actual Mexicans. It's the stuff that brands like Taco Bell, Ortega, and Old El Paso passed off in the 70s and 80s as "Mexican" to Americans who lived well north of the border. It's premised on a foundation of shredded iceburg lettuce, diced tomato, sour cream, Monterray Jack cheese (or sometimes cheddar), seasoned ground beef, and hard, deep fried tortilla shells. You know, what Mexicans eat. And as an exemplar of that genre it shines. I like it. You should go there and get some gringo tostadas, with a giant mound of iceburg. Be sure to get a 'margarita mix' margarita while you're there.

  • Tyler M.

Pretty good for the most part. Some nights it's a lot better than others. I Take the leftover fajitas and fry me with egg and throw on some salsa and sour cream for a mean breakfast burrito.

  • Kira H.

I am shocked by all these positive reviews. We came here for a late lunch on a Saturday as a last resort. We were starving after a long hike. We shared the nachos which weren't unusually large but made us feel sick for the next 12 hours. The chips were stale. The beans were hidden under the chips. There was hardly any meat, most of it unfortunately covered in sour cream. The cheese.... Oh my goodness, it was terrible. It was the texture of gum and chewy and there was too much of it in several places. It was just weird. Since we were starving we forced it down. Service was fine. Salsa was tasty. That's about it.

    (2)
  • Ella V.

This place is so crazy!!!111!!! Sigh. Anywho, good drinks, good chips, okay salsa, yummy enchiladas, great service. Go there and fill up on yummies!

  • James K.

Crazy Pepper was fine, but nothing special in my opinion. I wouldn't go thinking that you were going to have a revelatory Mexican experience. The decor was pretty standard with whitewashed walls, beer decorations, a faux hut roof sticking out of the wall (ala Chevy's and countless other places). But it was clean and not uninviting. We each had a house marg, which were good and didn't seem to be from a mix. But $6.50 for a house drink is steep in my book, unless you know the quality of the tequila they're putting in it. I had the Pork Chile Verde and my wife had the Shrimp enchilada ala Crema. Mine was okay, but a little too sour for my tastes; maybe a little less tomatillo. My wife made quick work of the shrimp in the enchiladas, since there weren't that many. Lastly, the service was quick, but fairly impersonal. Our server was in such a hurry to take our drink order, my wife didn't have time to even find the menu to see if they made different flavors of margs. As I read through my review I see that I say the word 'but' alot. And I think that's appropriate for Crazy Pepper. It's okay, BUT it could be better!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
